Hundreds of English verbs exist with a preposition or an adverb attached to them thus acqiring an entirely different meaning from the original meanning of the one part-verb. Such verbs could be called PREPOSITIONAL or PHRASAL VERBS.

The phrasal verb could be an intransitive verb used without an object as in the case of "Yesterday I came across an old friend of mine".

Phrasal verbs are a very characteristic feature of the English language and particularly of "conversational English".

They constitute the main part of an informal conversation. The foreign learner of English very often feels frustrated on account of not being familiar with the different combinations between the one-part verb and the preposition or adverb attached to it. It makes him feel that he is not making much progress with the learning of the "real" English language. A good reason for the foreign learner of English not to be familiar with the semantic meaning of the various phrasal verbs is the following fact: when he is not familiar with the phrasal verb but just with the first-part verb, he thinks that he is dealing with a verb followed by a mere preposition or adverb and not a phrasal verb.

Thus he is not able to recognise that he is confronted with a different semantic meaning because it is no more a verb followed by a preposition or an adverb but a phrasal verb in which the preposition or the adverb constitutes the second part of the phrasal verb. Consequently he doesn't look up the phrasal verb and this fact holds back the foreign learner of English.

The verb is familiar to him and he guesses the overall meaning of the sentence. A good way to tackle this problem is to learn the phrasal verbs separately. This book has been designed to help the learner in his efforts to learn about the phrasal verbs.
