No Man's Land / Harold Piter

HAROLD PINTER was born in London in 1930. He wrote his first play The Room in 1957 while he was an actor in repertory, and completed The Dumb Waiter and The Birthday Party during the same year. Since then he has produced a body of work for the stage, television and films which has given him an international reputation. In 1960 The Caretaker, his first big success, received both the Evening Standard Drama Award for the best play of the year and the Page 1 Award of the Newspaper Guild of New York. In 1967 The Homecoming won the Drama Critics' Circle Award on Broadway. More recently Old Times has been successfully performed all over Europe and North America.

HAROLD PINTER
NO MAN'S LAND

A house near Hampstead Heath. Night. Two men in a room. . . The beginning of Pinter's most recent full-length play is as mysterious and as normal as ever. Do Hirst and Spooner know each other or is each performing an elaborate charade of recognition? The ambiguity - and the comedy - intensify with the arrival of Briggs and Foster, the one ostensibly a manservant, the other a male secretary. All four inhabit a no man's land between time present and time remembered, between reality and imagination - a territory which Pinter explores with his customary wit and skill.

The first production of No Man's Land, directed by Peter Hall, is scheduled for the National Theatre, with Sir John Gielgud playing Spooner and Sir Ralph Richardson as Hirst.
