To the student
Why?
This is your Progress Book.
In class you learn to speak English and to listen to it and to understand it. There is often not enough time to write, too.
But often it is easier for you to speak if you can practise new structures at home when there is more time to think.
And perhaps you want to learn to write in English, too.
When?
When you find this

in your Coursebook, you can do exercise no. 2 in your Progress Book. Do all the other exercises at the end of the Unit in the Course- book; then you know all the new words and can practise them again.
How?
Look at the examples before you do an exercise. They tell you what to do or what to fill in. The boxes tell you the grammar you can practise:

They are often like the С parts in your Coursebook.
Find your answers with the help of these boxes and examples. Then look at the key at the end of the Progress Book. Ask your course leader only if there is a problem.
Y ou learn most from answers which you find out in this way.
What?
There are seven types of exercises in the Units of the Progress Book.
1 Fill in new words from the В text.
2 Practise the new structures.
3 Practise other grammar problems from the Unit.
4 Practise "structural words " like at, by from nothing, when etc. and phrases with these words.
5 Repeat words and structures from other Units. Repeat and practise idiomatic expressions which help you to express what you want to say (your "intentions").
6 There are also some additional texts. You can read them at home or in class. The new words in these texts are from "The Threshold Level: 'English’’ (Council of Europe curriculum for adult learners); you should learn them if you want to take a Threshold Level examination after your second year of learning English. The words in bold type are not in the Student’s Book; they are only used in this Progress Book. Use your dictionary if the explanations in the Progress Book do not tell you everything you would like to know.
Ah...!
If you write your answers in pencil, it is easy to correct them.
Do the tests after Unit 6 and Unit 12.
At the end of the course you will have written a "second
coursebook". We hope you will enjoy doing so.
