FOREWORD
Making America: The Society and Culture of the United States is a Forum Series publication of the United States Information Agency, Division for the Study of the United States. Edited by Luther S. Luedtke, Associate Professor of English, University of Southern California, the volume contains twenty-three original essays by major American scholars, as well as an introductory essay by Professor Luedtke. The book covers virtually every aspect of American life and culture—ethnicity, urbanization, the arts, philosophy, religion, politics, law, and popular culture. In delving into the past, the authors seek not only to reexamine the foundations of American life but also to bring a fresh perspective to contemporary issues.

Making America contains a wealth of information and provides a point of departure for discussion of the American character—its values, evolution, and paradoxes. This volume will assist students and scholars to better understand the complexity and diversity of the United States.
