FOREWORD
I published "The Testimony of the Atom Bomb" in Japanese language in 1970 in memory of the spirits of my subordinates who lost their lives through the world’s first atomb bomb dropped on Hiroshima on Auugst 6th, 1945.

This book contains the hidden hisotry and testimonies of a few of my subordinates and myself, who miraculously survived the atom bomb disaster, collected at a round-table talk. I distributed this book to the bereaved families of my subordinates and acquaintances. I also presented complimentary copies to the National Diet Library in Tokyo, and to the atom bomb memorial halls in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Last year I sent one copy of "The Testimony of the Atom Bomb" to the U.S. Library of Congress upon their request.

One of my friends, who heard it, told me, "I wept when I read your book upon its publication. Since then I began to feel that this book should be translated into foreign languages and read widely throughout the world. Mr. Okubo, please appeal to the peoples of the world at this opportunity!"

Encouraged by such words, and also being aware that some people wished the translation even since the publication, I have decided to publish the English version of "The Testimony of the Atom Bomb." I intend to present the book (English version) to the Headquarters of the United Nations, national congresses of the member countries of the United Nations, the Headquarters of the International Red Cross and its branches all over the world.

The English translation of "The Testimony of the Atom Bomb" is slated for publication in May of 1972. At the end of May President Nixon of the United States is to visit the Soviet Union and hold a summit meeting with Premier Kosygin and Chief Secretary Brezhnev on the nuclear disarmament.

As one of the Diet Members who are atom bomb victims, I hope sincerely that the United States, the Soviet Union, China, France, etc., which possess nuclear weapons at present, may come unanimously to the "Worldwide Declaration of the Prohibition of Atom Bombs." I hereby appeal to the sympathy of the intelligent people throughout the world.

On the International Red Cross Day, May 8, 1972.

Takeo Okubo, Member of the Japanese House of Representatives.
