Virginia: A Play / Edna O'Brien

VIRGINIA
This new play by Edna O’Brien, the celebrated novelist and short-story writer, is a perceptive evocation of the mercurial emotional life of Virginia Woolf, of her close unity with her husband Leonard Woolf, and her relationship with Vita Sackville-West, the other main character in the play. From Virginia Woolf’s novels, letters, diaries and other writings, from Leonard Woolf’s autobiography, and Quentin Bell’s biography of Virginia, Edna O’Brien has drawn word and image and brilliantly fused them into a dramatic sequence which captures the essence of Virginia’s genius.

The first performance of the play at the Stratford Festival, Ontario, in June 1980, with Maggie Smith in the title role, was received with much acclaim. As Michael Billington commented, ‘What both writer and actress managed to persuade us of is the extraordinary emotional volatility of Virginia Woolf’ ; and the novelist, Clare Colvin, wrote: ‘She constructs her play so skilfully that it is hard at times to tell where Woolf’s writing becomes O’Brien’s.’
