True and False / David Mamet

"Hard-edged, pragmatic and idealistic. . . . Every actor or would-actor should read this book." -chicago tribun
/nvent nothing, deny nothing, speak up. stand up. stay out school. With these words, one of our most brilliantly iconocla tic playwrights takes on the art and profession of acting, in book that is as shocking as it is practical, as witty as it is instructiv and as irreverent as it is inspiring.
David Mamet was born in Chicago in 1947 and studied at Goddard College in Vermont and at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater in New York. He has taught at Goddard College, the Yale Drama School, and New York University, and lectures at the Atlantic Theater Company, of which he is a founding member. He was the first artistic director of Chicago’s St. Nicholas Theater Company, and has directed the films House of Games, Things Change, Homicide, Oleanna, and The Spanish Prisoner. Mamet was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross. His acclaimed plays and screenplays include Speed-the-Plow, American Buffalo, Sexual Perversity in Chicago, and The Verdict, for which he received an Academy Award nomination.
Acting schools, "interpretation." "sense memory." "The Method" David Mamet takes a jackhammer to the idols of contemporary actin while revealing the true heroism and nobility of the craft. He show actors how to undertake auditions and rehearsals, deal with ageni and directors, engage audiences, and stay faithful to the script, whi rejecting the temptations that seduce so many of their colleague Bracing in its clarity, exhilarating in its common sense, True and Fali is invaluable.
"Trenchant. . . Mamet’s pared-down, occasionally cryptic prose ca make powerful sense." -the new york time
"This book should be read and considered by everyone who acts."
