SOIL CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT IN THE HUMID TROPICS

Edited by D. J. Greenland, Professor of Soil Science, University of Reading,

England, and formerly Director of Research, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria, and R. Lai, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria

Farming systems in Western Europe do not need to take account, to any great extent, of soil erosion, because of the prevailing rainfall pattern. However, the increasing population density in developing countries, where heavy rainfall is a regular characteristic of the climate, is now producing a soil erosion problem far more serious than existed previously in the indigenous cultivation scheme. Modification of the present system, or development of new systems, is essential. This book deals with the characteristics of soils and climates in the humid tropics and soil erosion under existing systems, and discusses new systems needed to control it.

Contents: Foreword; Introduction; Basic Aspects of Soil and Water Conservation; Characterization of Soils and Climates in relation to the Erosion Hazard; Management for Erosion Control; Farming Systems and Erosion Hazard in Africa; Farming Systems and Erosion Hazard in the Far East; Farming Systems and Erosion Hazard in Latin America; Towards Erosion Control in the Humid Tropics; Appendix; Subject Index

A TREATISE ON DINITROGEN FIXATION, Section III: Biology Edited by R.W.F. Hardy, ЕЛ. du Pont de Nemours & Co., and W.S. Silver,
University of South Florida
This section of the treatise is devoted to a consideration of the broader aspects of dinitrogen fixation—the organisms involved, pertinent physiological processes of the microbe and the host plant, and, where appropriate, certain phytogeographical facets.

A TREATISE ON DINITROGEN FIXATION, Section IV: Agronomy and Ecology Edited by R.W.F. Hardy, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., and A.H. Gibson,
Division of Plant Industry, Australia
Emphasizes the nature and extent of the contribution of free-living and symbiotic diazotrophs in both natural habitats and agricultural situations. It includes the factors, either environmental or managerial, that influence this contribution. Considerable attention is given to the legumes as the principal contributor to the nitrogen economy of many soils.
