... The topics considered during the Symposium covered a wide range of subjects encompassed under the general term of ''Culture," The role of folklore in Bulgarian history was considered. The works of individuals engaged in cultural activities were scrutinized. The view of "foreign" countries and peoples were taken into account in relation to the unfolding of Bulgarian cultural and historical development. Emigration and linguistics, literature and pure history, political considerations along with religious influences - all these things were presented and discussed in great detail. Anthropology, ethnomusicology and ethnography were disciplines which also came under consideration.

Each evening, apart from the academic role of the Symposium proper, a concert was presented by talented young people. The first evening Miss Pavlina Dokovska, a brilliant Bulgarian pianist presented works of both classic writers of her country as well as compositions of other writers.

The Tamburitzans entertained after a formal banquet, presenting a wide view of folkloric material. On the third evening, Pavlina Dokovska was joined by the Bulgarian flutist Ginka Gerova-Ortega for a program of predominantly Bulgarian composers. All of the evening concerts were well attended and very well received. It all added a fine touch to the overall Symposium.

In addition, the Bulgarian visitors were taken to the local Bulgarian-Macedonian Beneficial Society Club where they were treated to a brief rehearsal by a local Bulgarian dance group. An excellent dinner, "Vecherinka style" followed the rehearsal after which films resulting form certain field research was shown to them.

At the conclusion of the Symposium, during the review session and afterwards, all of the participants had words of pleasure and gratitude for having the Symposium. All felt it was an enriching experience. Perhaps it can be best summed up from this quote which came in a letter some days after the conclusion of the Sympsoium:

"This letter grows out of a delightful few days spent at the recent Bulgarian-American conference that you and your associates at DUTIFA so ably organized.

As you know, this is the third conference of yours that I have attended. The fact that it was held in your Tamburitzan building reinforced my perceptions of the richness of your cultural center. In these very difficult times of academic retrenchment, the continued existence and indeed prospering of DUTIFA serves as a beacon to those of us concerned with the history and culture of the Balkan peoples."

In conclusion, DUTIFA is indeed extremely grateful to IREX for its financial support to this most worthwhile project.
