A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE SECOND EDITION
The first edition of this book, which was published simultaneously in Bulgarian, French, German and English in 1967, was out of print within a short time. It evoked a threat response, both in ourcountry and abroad. I received letters and comments from many countries in the world, including Argentina, Sweden, Denmark, Israel, the German lederai Republic, France, etc. All of them, without exception, expressed not so much their surprise at the facts, disclosed in the book, as a feeling of respect for the valiant efforts to save the Bulgarian Jews during the years of the Second World War, described in it. Proposals were also received to screen the book and the Swedish Television made a documentary film on it.

The present second edition does not substantially differ from the ßrst one. I have endeavoured to preserve its structure and its documentary character and to abide by the positions of an objective narrator - a difficult task for a participant in the described events. On the other hand, I have enlarged some of the more important episodes, adding a number of documents and including new material, discovered after 1967. A major development during that period was the trial of Adolf Beckerle, former Minister Plenipotentiary of the German Reich in Sofia and one of the main characters in the book. At the trial, held in I rankfurt-on-Main, certain facts, unknown until then, were brought to light, including telling passages from Beckerle’s persona/ diary. Naturally, this could not fail to be reflected in the current edition. In this sense, the book is now more complete, the story is clearer and the facts are even more adequately explained...
