Barcelona’s nomination as the seat of the 1992 Olympic Games changed, once again, the evolution of the city. This historical milestone provided Barcelona with a transformation, the latest among many throughout this city’s history.

In this way Barcelona underwent a deep urbanistic change, only comparable to those made for the celebration of the World Exhibitions in 1929 and 1988. Barcelona has recovered a vitality which was lost during the political transition(1975-1985).The Games have definitely given Barcelona, in the phase of eternal development, a magnificent excuse to “finish” the city.

The present Barcelona is a city open to the sea, returning it to its Phoenician origins, the first traders to reach the Catalan coast and found a centre of business conections with the rest of the Peninsula.

HISTORIC BACKGROUND.

The origins of Barcelona are somewhat confused, plagued even with legends. It is true that the Phoenicians were the first “invaders” and the majority of historians agree that it was the Cartaginese who baptised the city. It was, in fact, Hannibal who, in memory of his father Amilcar Barca, gave it the name of Barcino.

The references detected in the archeological remains found at the foot of Montjuic, show, however, that prior to the various invasions and cultures established in Barcelona, there existed a native population whose antiquity is difficult to determine. It does however, fit in perfectly with the other civilizations on the Paleolitic Mediterranean coast.
